چکیده

[1] The oxidation of isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) is known to play a central role in the photochemistry of the troposphere, but is generally not considered to lead to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA), due to the relatively high volatility of known reaction products. However, in the chamber studies described here, we measure SOA production from isoprene photooxidation under high-NOx conditions, at significantly lower isoprene concentrations than had been observed previously. Mass yields are low (0.9–3.0%), but because of large emissions, isoprene photooxidation may still contribute substantially to global SOA production. Results from photooxidation experiments of compounds structurally similar to isoprene (1,3-butadiene and 2and 3-methyl-1-butene) suggest that SOA formation from isoprene oxidation proceeds from the further reaction of first-generation oxidation products (i.e., the oxidative attack of both double bonds). The gas-phase chemistry of such oxidation products is in general poorly characterized and warrants further study. Citation: Kroll, J. H., N. L. Ng, S. M. Murphy, R. C. Flagan, and J. H. Effect of NOx level on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from the photooxidation of terpenes

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from the photooxidation of one monoterpene (α-pinene) and two sesquiterpenes (longifolene and aromadendrene) is investigated in the Caltech environmental chambers. The effect of NOx on SOA formation for these biogenic hydrocarbons is evaluated by performing photooxidation experiments under varying NOx conditions. The NOx dependence of α-pinene SOA forma...

Secondary organic aerosol formation from the photooxidation of isoprene, 1,3-butadiene, and 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene under high NOx conditions

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from atmospheric oxidation of isoprene has been the subject of multiple studies in recent years; however, reactions of other conjugated dienes emitted from anthropogenic sources remain poorly understood. SOA formation from the photooxidation of isoprene, isoprene-1-13C, 1,3butadiene, and 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene is investigated for high NOx conditions...

Secondary organic aerosol formation from isoprene photooxidation.

Recent work has shown that the atmospheric oxidation of isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene, C5H8) leads to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). In this study, the mechanism of SOA formation by isoprene photooxidation is comprehensively investigated, by measurements of SOA yields over a range of experimental conditions, namely isoprene and NOx concentrations. Hydrogen peroxide is used...

Comment on "Unexpected epoxide formation in the gas-phase photooxidation of isoprene".

Paulot et al. (Reports, 7 August 2009, p. 730) reported that the photooxidation of isoprene under low-nitrogen oxides (NOx) conditions produces epoxides that can facilitate the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). However, another pathway involving the formation of methyl-butenediol intermediates can also lead to isoprene-derived SOA formation. Further research is needed to clarify the...

Gaseous products and secondary organic aerosol formation during long term oxidation of isoprene and methacrolein

Firstand higher order-generation products formed from the oxidation of isoprene and methacrolein with OH radicals in the presence of NOx have been studied in a simulation chamber. Significant oxidation rates have been maintained for up to 7 h, allowing the study of highly oxidized products. Gas-phase product distribution and yields were obtained, and show good agreement with previous studies. S...
